Scores and reviews from trusted third-party platforms carry real weight in AI training data and citation patterns. They are the most direct form of third-party validation available to craft beverage producers.
When an AI model assesses whether to recommend your tasting room, it looks for external confirmation that your brand is what you say it is. Reviews on the right platforms are among the most powerful signals it can find.
The goal is not to accumulate a volume of five-star reviews as a vanity metric. The goal is to build a consistent, recent, multi-platform body of evidence that your brand delivers the experience it promises:
- Recency: a steady stream of recent reviews signals an active, open business, whereas a cluster from three years ago with nothing since raises a flag.
- Platform authority: Google and Untappd carry more weight than a niche aggregator.
- Volume: a hundred reviews at 4.3 stars is generally a stronger signal than ten at 5.0.
- Content specificity: reviews that name specific products, staff members, or experiences give AI richer data to cite than short, generic praise.
Building a review generation habit versus a one-time push is what produces the profile AI trusts. The organic review process – asking a guest at the right moment, making it easy, directing them to the right platform – is a repeatable system. Build it once. Run it consistently. The compounding effect over 12 to 24 months is significant.
It can be uncomfortable to ask guests to leave a review. Consider the following when offering guests the opportunity to review your company:
- Identify the moments: The natural ask happens at peak satisfaction: after a great tasting flight, at the close of a tour, or when a guest lingers and shares something positive. Train staff to recognize those moments and know what to say.
- Make it frictionless: QR codes at the bar or checkout that link directly to your Google Business Profile review page eliminate steps. The fewer the steps, the higher the conversion.
- Follow up via email: For guests who have opted into your list, a post visit email that thanks them and includes a direct review link is among the highest-converting review generation tactics in hospitality.
- Allow feedback after events: For ticketed or reservation-based events, build a post-event feedback step into your follow-up process. This generates review content tied to specific experiences, exactly the kind of qualitative detail AI uses to answer destination queries.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines require that any material connection between a reviewer and a brand be disclosed. You cannot offer discounts, free product, or other incentives in exchange for reviews without disclosure, and many platform terms of service prohibit incentivized reviews outright, regardless of disclosure. The rule of thumb: ask sincerely, make it easy, and never attach a reward to a positive review.
Not all review platforms carry the same weight for all producer types. Prioritize the platforms AI draws from most heavily for your category, then build outward from there. Consider adding logos and links to the relevant review sites on your homepage and display beverage-specific ratings on their individual pages.
- All producers start here: when AI generates a local recommendation, it draws heavily on Google Business Profile data: your hours, location, category, photos, and reviews. Keep it updated. Respond to every review, positive and negative. A response demonstrates that a real person is behind the brand, which matters both to AI and to prospective guests reading those exchanges.
- Wineries: Vivino and CellarTracker are the two highest-priority wine-specific platforms for AI citation. Vivino’s user base is enormous and its data feeds into AI recommendation engines for retail and restaurant queries. CellarTracker’s structured database of wines, vintages, and community tasting notes is a primary source AI draws from for product-level authority. Wine-Searcher is critical for any winery with retail distribution. Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, and Decanter coverage carry the highest per-citation authority weight of any platform in the wine category.
- Breweries: Love it or hate it, Untappd is the most AI-indexed beer community platform by a significant margin. Every check-in, rating, and brewery follow on Untappd is indexed and adds to your brand’s authority signal. Claim your brewery profile, upload accurate beer information for every product on tap, and respond to check-ins when guests tag your brand. RateBeer was a community for enthusiast-level discovery, particularly for barrel-aged, sour, and IPA styles, but it closed as of February, 2025. Google and Yelp round out the necessary-but-evil brewery review stack.
- Distilleries: Distiller.com is the spirits equivalent of Untappd – a community platform where enthusiasts log tastings, write reviews, and follow brands. Claim your profile and ensure every current expression is accurately listed. Master of Malt carries significant AI citation weight for spirits, particularly whiskey and gin. Google and TripAdvisor carry the most weight for distillery tasting room and tour experience reviews.
- Cideries and meaderies: The Cider Review, Hard Cider Reviews, Cider Culture, and Untappd (which supports cider and mead listings) are your primary platforms. Prioritize Google above all, then any regional tourism platforms relevant to your area. This category is less consolidated than beer or wine: consistent Google Business Profile management matters more here than platform diversification.
We recently introduced an AI Discoverability Tool on that produces a report on how/where you show up in AI search, with recommendations on how to signal more credibility and authority. Simply enter the name of your brewery, winery, distillery, or tasting room, your location, and your website address and we’ll query Claude to determine where your brand shows up in relevant drinker queries, as well as an assessment of how you stack up to our AI Discoverability benchmarks.
